AI Infrastructure Is the New Oil: Why Nations Are Racing to Build Domestic Compute Capacity

New Delhi [India], October 12: Artificial intelligence is increasingly being viewed as a strategic national asset rather than just another technology trend. Over the past decade, countries have competed to build digital economies through connectivity, software innovation, and data-driven services. Today, the focus is shifting toward something deeper: the infrastructure required to power AI itself.

Much like energy resources shaped economic and geopolitical influence in previous decades, AI infrastructure is beginning to play a similar role. Compute capacity, data centres, semiconductors, and cloud platforms are becoming critical building blocks for economic growth, technological competitiveness, and national resilience. According to Next Move Strategy Consulting’s report, the global Sovereign AI Infrastructure Market was valued at USD 61.4 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 726.58 billion by 2035, reflecting the growing importance countries are placing on domestic AI capabilities.

The New Fuel Behind the AI Economy

The rapid adoption of Generative AI, Enterprise AI, and large language models has triggered an unprecedented surge in demand for computing resources. Training and running advanced AI models requires thousands of GPUs, high-performance storage systems, advanced networking infrastructure, and massive data centre capacity.

This growing demand is reshaping investment priorities worldwide. Governments across LATAM, EMEA and APAC are investing heavily in AI infrastructure, data centres, semiconductor manufacturing, and sovereign cloud ecosystems. Increasingly, nations are recognising that relying entirely on foreign infrastructure for AI development could create long-term economic and strategic dependencies.

The conversation is no longer limited to software innovation. It is now about who owns the infrastructure that powers AI, where data is processed, and how future digital economies will be built.

    Why Domestic Compute Capacity Matters

Access to computing power has become one of the most important requirements for AI development. Organisations building AI applications need reliable access to GPUs, cloud infrastructure, storage, and networking environments capable of supporting large-scale workloads.

However, dependence on overseas infrastructure can create challenges around availability, latency, compliance, and data governance. As AI becomes embedded in sectors such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, education, and government, the need for sovereign cloud, data residency, and locally governed infrastructure is becoming more important.

This is particularly relevant for countries like India, where AI adoption is accelerating rapidly. Organisations increasingly want infrastructure that not only delivers performance but also aligns with local regulatory requirements and keeps critical workloads closer to where data is generated and consumed.

India’s Opportunity in the AI Infrastructure Era

India has already demonstrated its ability to build digital public infrastructure at scale through initiatives such as Aadhaar, UPI, and ONDC. The next phase of growth may depend on whether the country can build similar capabilities in AI infrastructure.

The government has already taken important steps through the IndiaAI Mission, while private sector investments in data centres, cloud computing, and AI-ready infrastructure continue to grow. At the same time, demand for domestic compute resources is rising as enterprises move from AI experimentation to production-scale deployments.

This creates a significant opportunity for India’s cloud ecosystem. Building domestic GPU infrastructure, expanding cloud services, strengthening data centre capacity, and enabling secure AI workloads could help reduce dependence on overseas infrastructure while supporting the country’s growing AI ambitions.

Rahul Takkallapally, Co-Founder, BharathCloud, shared, “AI innovation ultimately depends on infrastructure. Models, applications, and AI services can only scale when organisations have reliable access to compute, storage, and secure cloud environments. The countries that invest in building that foundation today will be better positioned to participate in the AI economy of tomorrow.”

Building the Foundations of the AI Economy

The long-term success of AI will depend on much more than algorithms alone. It will require investments in cloud infrastructure, AI compute, data centres, cybersecurity, and managed services that allow organisations to build, deploy, and scale AI applications efficiently.

For India, the opportunity is not simply about adopting AI. It is about creating an infrastructure ecosystem that enables AI innovation to happen within the country. As businesses increasingly prioritise sovereign AI, data governance, and local cloud infrastructure, demand for domestic compute capacity is likely to continue growing.

The global race for AI leadership is already underway. While software and models often attract the headlines, the real foundation lies beneath them. Just as energy infrastructure powered industrial economies, AI infrastructure is emerging as the foundation of the next digital economy. Just as energy infrastructure shaped economic power in the industrial era, AI infrastructure is poised to shape influence in the digital age.
