From School Labs to University Research: How Early STEM Projects Can Prepare Students for Global Higher Education

New Delhi [India], October 26: As universities worldwide increasingly emphasise research capabilities, innovation and interdisciplinary learning, education experts believe that a student’s preparation for global higher education must begin well before university applications. Early exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) projects is emerging as an important foundation for developing the analytical thinking, experimentation and problem-solving abilities required in advanced academic environments.

The growing importance of research-oriented education is reflected in international findings. According to the OECD’s PISA 2022 assessment, students exposed to teaching practices that encourage original thinking and independent problem-solving demonstrated stronger creative-thinking proficiency. Meanwhile, UNESCO reports that women account for only 35% of STEM graduates globally, highlighting the need for more inclusive participation in scientific learning from an early age.

Education experts suggest that traditional laboratory exercises, often restricted to demonstrating established scientific principles, must evolve into opportunities for independent investigation. Projects involving robotics, renewable energy, environmental monitoring, artificial intelligence and basic scientific modelling can help students understand how theoretical knowledge translates into practical applications.

For instance, a student developing a low-cost water purification model learns more than chemistry. The project introduces experimental design, data collection, hypothesis testing and the evaluation of results. These competencies form the foundation of university-level research.

As per Dr Aditi Misra, Director, Dharav High Schools “STEM education should not be limited to completing experiments or preparing models for annual exhibitions. Its real value emerges when students learn to question observations, investigate problems and develop solutions independently. A student who designs a simple irrigation system or studies local environmental challenges is already developing the mindset of a researcher. Schools must create opportunities where experimentation, collaboration and even unsuccessful attempts become meaningful learning experiences. Such exposure strengthens scientific confidence and prepares students for the intellectual demands of higher education, both in India and internationally.”

The relevance of these capabilities becomes particularly significant as Indian students explore international universities offering research-intensive programmes.

Germany provides an important example of this transition. According to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), approximately 402,000 international students and doctoral candidates were enrolled in German universities during the winter semester of 2024–25. Indian enrolment reached approximately 58,800, registering nearly 20% annual growth and making India the largest country of origin for international students in Germany.

DAAD further reported that more than half of international students in Germany were pursuing engineering and natural sciences, demonstrating the importance of technical education within the country’s international academic landscape.

Considering the same Dr Latika Chaudhary, CEO- Sales and Marketing, YES Germany said “Students often begin preparing for international education by focusing on university rankings, language requirements and admission procedures. However, academic readiness requires much more than fulfilling eligibility criteria. Students who have participated in meaningful STEM projects are often better positioned to understand research methodologies, laboratory expectations and independent academic work. In Germany, where engineering, applied sciences and research-based learning are important components of higher education, early practical exposure can support a smoother academic transition. The objective should be to build genuine scientific curiosity rather than simply accumulate certificates for university applications.”

Experts also emphasise that early STEM exposure should not become another competitive credential-building exercise. Instead, schools should encourage sustained projects, mentorship opportunities and collaboration across scientific disciplines.

Building connections between school laboratories and university research environments could help students approach higher education with greater confidence and clarity.

As international education becomes increasingly accessible, the conversation must move beyond where students pursue their degrees to how effectively they are prepared to learn, investigate and innovate. The journey towards becoming a researcher may begin with a modest experiment in a school laboratory.
