Surat (Gujarat) [India], May 30: Renowned environmentalist and social activist Viral Desai, fondly known as the “Greenman,” is set to launch a seven-day tree plantation campaign starting June 5, marking World Environment Day. The initiative will see 1,000 trees planted across Surat and Navsari as part of his ongoing mission to foster ecological responsibility and civic unity.

Rooted in Desai’s long-standing environmental movement, ‘Satyagraha Against Pollution and Climate Change,’ the campaign carries forward his vision of turning ideology into tangible impact. To date, the movement has mobilised over 2 lakh green volunteers and facilitated the planting of more than 6.5 lakh trees across Gujarat.

“This year, our campaign is inspired by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, as we commemorate his 150th birth anniversary,” said Viral Desai. “His ideals of unity, cleanliness, and harmony with nature continue to shape our work.”

A Living Tribute with Strategic Impact

The plantation drive will cover key areas including Maroli, Kadoli, Sarthana, and Sachin, focusing on ecological enrichment in urban and peri-urban pockets. These locations have been identified for their potential to benefit from enhanced green cover and biodiversity.

The campaign goes beyond symbolic planting—it is a calculated effort to build climate resilience, promote civic engagement, and pay homage to India’s green heritage. By involving local government bodies, youth groups, and community organisations, Desai aims to ensure the long-term survival and growth of the saplings.

“What we’re planting is not just a tree,” Desai emphasized. “It’s a living legacy—something future generations can be proud of.”

    Green Cities: Urgent and Essential

As India’s cities expand rapidly, the role of green urban spaces is more critical than ever. Trees serve as natural infrastructure, mitigating heat islands, improving air quality, and supporting local ecosystems. Desai’s campaign serves as a powerful reminder that urban greening is a necessity, not a luxury.

    Youth-Led, Community-Driven

A hallmark of Desai’s movement is its strong youth engagement. This year’s initiative will involve students, NSS units, colleges, and youth clubs through the innovative “Plant & Pledge” model, where each participant plants a sapling and takes a sustainability oath. The effort aims to deepen environmental consciousness and create a generation of green ambassadors.

From Local Action to National Inspiration

By drawing on Sardar Patel’s legacy of unity and discipline, the campaign reinforces the idea that environmental stewardship is a national duty, not just the work of a few. Desai’s efforts stand as a beacon of hope, offering a replicable model of grassroots climate action in an era of growing ecological urgency.

    Join the Movement

Residents of Surat and Navsari are invited to participate in this week-long green drive. Every sapling planted is a step toward a stronger, greener, and more united India.

One tree. One volunteer. One mission. A greener India begins June 5.
